Sunday 13 October. Melksham v Minety 38 -0 (HT 12 – 0)
The disintegration of my notebook in the pouring rain this week means the match report will be curtailed and in a slightly different style to the usual, which is a shame as there was so much to write about as the team got back to winning ways. It also means that I cannot credit all of the good play I saw, so I am sorry if I have missed anyone out. However, there was a scoring debut from Jack Baker and even a try by a forward to celebrate!
The first half saw Jack B score that first try in the first play of the match, built on a good solid scrum from the Blues. Alistair Smith converted the try. It is fair to say that even with a mix of players as Simmo looked to give everyone a game (although Louis Simmons hooked throughout and Dougie Satchell took on the number 8 role for much of the match), the scrum dominated today and it was a similar story in the lineout. This provided the team with a good basis to build on, which was just as well as they had two players sin binned in the first half for clear and unacceptable foul play. The strong scrum ensured that the regular knock-ons inevitable with a wet ball and slippery hands (oooooh matron!) resulted in Melksham retaining the ball or winning it against the head. Indeed, the second try of the match scored by Cameron Bull also came from a scrum, this time won against the head. The half time score stood at 12 – 0.
The second half continued in a similar vein, although Melksham were more disciplined and started to compete more in and around the ruck. Although Minety pressed a few times, strong defence with some excellent covering tackles (Ed Woolford had a cracking game) kept them out and the visitors always faced the danger of a breakout by Harry Parsons, Jack B or Cameron. There were tries scored by Jack B, Harry, Alfie Hiscox (a good spot from the base of another successful scrum) and finally, after a run from Zac Beavis that saw him break at least 3 tackles, Hamish scored a good, solid forward’s try. Alistair converted 3 of these, and so the score ended 38 - 0.
